Following Government instruction and advice, most golf clubs have taken the decision over the past week or so to close their courses for an indefinite period.

It is crucially important that we support the vital work being done by the NHS and other key staff by not adding to their workloads during this difficult period. At this time, we don’t know how long the restrictions, and therefore the course closures, will be in place.

This means no-one will be playing golf during this lockdown and this will clearly have an impact on our fixtures for the season.

At this stage, it looks most likely that we will be unable to play any of the following due to course closures and/or restrictions on group gatherings:

  • 19-Apr Hunter Cup at Peebles GC

  • 10-May Donaldson Trophy at Woll GC

  • 23-May Society Quaich at Monksford House GC

  • 31-May Centenary Cup at Deer Park G&CC

  • 14-Jun Black Bull Inn Shield at Torwoodlee GC

  • 29-Jun Civic Week competition at Lauder GC

At best, at this time, we can hope that restrictions may be lifted for the remaining three matches:

  • 02-Aug EGG Cup at Minto GC (now postponed till 2021)

  • 30-Aug Brotherston Trophy at Hirsel GC (now postponed till 2021)

  • 27-Sep Scott’s Garage Pairs at Eyemouth GC (now postponed till 2021)

However, given the current spread of this pandemic, even these may not be allowed.

As such, the Committee has decided that our season should be modified as follows:

  • The Club Championship and the Burnham Bogey competitions will be abandoned for 2020.

  • Existing Office Bearers and Committee Members will remain in place throughout 2020 and 2021 to provide continuity.

  • Anyone who pays, or has paid their Earlston Golf Club Society membership for 2020 will have that extended to the end of 2021.

  • Any deposits paid for the Centenary Cup at Deer Park on 31-May will be returned on request, or may be held for any rescheduled date, which will not be this year, again at your request.

The coronavirus situation will be monitored as it progresses and, if it becomes possible to hold any events later in the year, we will strive to run them. Any updates will be provided here and on our Facebook page

Thank you for your patience during these unprecedented times. Stay safe!

Kind regards,

Brian Hunter
